'Penombra' - Multispeaker, interactive installation at Royal College of Art
Excited to announce ‘Penombra’ - my first ever interactive installation work. Currently on show at the Royal College of Art, Battersea. Seven Curators on the RCA Curation MA course, commissioned me to create a new interactive, multi-speaker version of my composition: ‘HOWL!’. it explores our sense of identity in the context of contemporary digital life.
This installation will be open to the public until Sunday, 12-6pm (12-7:30pm on Friday) at the RCA Battersea, Riverside, 1 Hester Rd, London SW11 4AY.
DURATION: 10 mins, playing at :10 and :40 past each hour.
LIVE PERFORMANCE: Sunday at 1pm, when I will perform HOWL! with violinist Kasia Ziminska.
Set up as standing speakers with motion sensors attached surrounding a stool in the centre, ‘Penombra’ (‘Twilight’ in English) creates a sensory realm triggered by audience actions that brings forth multi-layered imagery and emotions: fear; hope; isolation; empathy; disorientation…
Ideated from a place of tracing one’s identity and sense of belonging, the Italian definition of the word penombra occupies an interesting space in this analysis and interpretation: a sort of diminished obscurity that allows for blended visibility or uncertainty without interfering with a sense of 'calming freshness.'
Big, big thanks to the super talented Gilad Barabi who assisted me in bringing this project to reality. Thanks so much for all the time & thought you’ve put into making the sensors & interaction work properly.
And of course big thanks to everyone in the Penumbra curation team: Beverley Harrison, Charles Lyu, Daisy Magnusson, Ecem Meric, Jane Lee, Vittoria Ciaraldi, and Yuchen Xie.
