Concert and Panel Talk on Art Politics in light of the Russo-Ukrainian War - Friday 8th December
Really looking forward to being part of the new 'The Social Canvas' project - which brings together political discussion and music. I'll be performing HOWL! live alongside clarinettist Nikolai Yaushev. Then I'll take part in the panel discussion on Art Politics in light of the Russo-Ukrainian War with Dr. Franziska Strack and Head of the Centre for Russian Music at Goldsmiths Dr. Tamsin Alexander.
HOWL!, initially inspired by the ‘Arab Spring’, explores the explosion of recent technologies as a conduit for protest and opposition movements of all kinds, but also their ambivalence and tendency towards corruption and confusion. The work is performed using an early 1970s ARP Odyssey Synthesiser which is then layered and filtered through computer processing and distortion. Through the ARP’s rich oscillations contrasting to the homogenous sounds we have been groomed to prefer, HOWL! is a cascade of the rise and fall of collective political emotion mediated through the technology of the past half decade. The rise and fall of mutual vitality in sync, and in tension with the machine.
This will be the inaugural project run by ‘The Social Canvas’, a newly established organisation using an interdisciplinary approach to reimagine the power of the Creative Arts in driving social change, bringing together experts from a diverse array of studies to tackle pressing social issues through project-based collaborations. The performance will also feature an improvisation performed by Dr. Khabat Abas on her Bombshell cello – a cello that is actually made from a bomb.
